A Contrast in Cultures

Calgary Chinatown, like Chinatown’s all over Canada, is the embodiment of the journey of theĀ first Chinese to set foot on our shores over 200 years ago. Through perseverance, determination, tolerance and passion, Calgary Chinatown has withstood untold challenges to establish itself as an integral part of the heart of Calgary

As you walk down Centre Street, you feel the sharp contrast between two cultures; the shopfronts with Chinese writing, the strips of roasted meat of various styles and shapes, or the smell of fresh baked buns and other delicacies. Within the modern architecture and bustle of the western metropolis is another world within.

200 Years, Countless Stories

This original Chinatown location is found on modern day 9th Avenue SE, it received unwanted attention when several of it’s inhabitants contracted Smallpox. A second Chinatown was established in 1901 on the North side of the railway tracks when Dr. Herdman, a minister with the Knox Presbyterian Church sought to introduce Christianity to the Chinese community.
